Welcome

Welcome to the College of Science Student Success Scene, a bi-weekly newsletter featuring activities and opportunities especially relevant for science undergraduates. The Science Student Success team is comprised of Terry Ham, International Student Integration and Retention Specialist, Natasha Harris, Associate Director of Science Diversity, Science Diversity, Danielle Sheese, Career Development and Retention Specialist, Laura Starr, Director for Experiential Learning and Student Success, and Connie Kaspar Wise, Associate Director of Science Diversity.

Recently, WISP held two wonderful events for our cohort.  We learned how to make our resumes great by Sally Luzader, Manager of Corporate Relations in the Computer Science Department.  She shared that resumes should be easy for employers to read, follow, and apply to a future role for applicant.  We should think of a resume as your life’s story in a concise manner.  Dr. Shalini Low-Nam, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics taught us about Intersectionality and how our personal and professional science identities connect in making us into amazing people.

COFFEE & CONVERSATION NETWORKING EVENT—BIOLOGY/CHEMISTRY RELATED CAREERS

Are you interested in using your major in a biology or chemistry related career field?

Then reserve your spot for...

Coffee & Conversation

When: Thursday, March 25, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Students must RSVP-link at the bottom of email

This event is for College of Science students ONLY.

What is Coffee & Conversation (C&C) VIRTUAL?

C&C brings students together with Purdue alumni and esteemed professionals from a particular career field.  Once everyone gets into Zoom, we’ll divide students into 4-5 groups, with 5-6 students and one alumni/professional for each group.  The alumni/professionals will begin by introducing themselves to those in the room.  After introductions, the speed-networking portion of the event will commence!  Each group will meet for approximately 15-20 minutes, in which time students will have the opportunity to ask questions.  Alumni/professionals are encouraged to tell students about their personal, academic, and career path, as well as advise students on how to make themselves competitive for today’s job market.  Once the time is up, each alumni/professional will rotate and move to another group of students and repeat the process.  This will give students the chance to get multiple perspectives on their questions.  Participation will allow you to establish connections with these professionals in an informal setting!

Nyle DiMarco, deaf activist, winner of America's Next Top Model and Dancing With the Stars and Chella Man, YouTube personality, act, model and activist.

When: Tuesday, March 23 @ 7:00 pm

For more information and to register click HERE

Nyle DiMarco
Since winning the 22nd season of Dancing With The Stars and the 22nd cycle of America’s Next Top Model, Nyle DiMarco has been an ambassador for the Deaf community and works to influence audiences that with a sense of community, commitment to your goals and a belief in yourself, you can accomplish anything. Born into a multigenerational deaf family, he is an honorary spokesperson for Language Equality and Acquisition of Deaf Kids (LEAD-K) and founder of the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which works to improve the lives of deaf people around the world. DiMarco produced the 2018 Broadway production of Children of a Lesser God, and was a creative collaborator on The ASL App, created by native deaf signers to teach conversational American Sign Language.  Believing that his deafness is “an asset rather than a limitation,” his work continuously strives to build bridges between the deaf and hearing by shining a light on the struggles and triumphs of Deaf culture.

Chella Man

Being deaf, genderqueer, trans masculine, Chinese, and Jewish, Chella Man found he did not have role models to look up to, so he decided to be his own representation. The motto of, “Be your own representation,” has become a pillar of his work and teachings. Since beginning his collegiate studies at the New School in Manhattan, he has built a following of 245,000 YouTube subscribers, written for Condé Nast’s first queer publication Them, and launched a radically inclusive clothing line in collaboration with Opening Ceremony. Man also signed as the first deaf and trans masculine model with IMG Models, and was cast as a superhero in DC Universe’s live-action series Titans. Through his talks, he opens up about his experiences transitioning on testosterone, navigating the world with a disability, and facing isolation while growing up in a small, conservative Pennsylvania community.

This event is being sponsored by the American Sign Language Club at Purdue. The program would not be possible without the financial support of the Purdue University Student Fee Advisory Board. Additional support provided by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Center.
